So, my faithful Macbook Pro died a sudden death a few weeks ago. I had AppleCare, but of course it was voided due to a spill two years ago. Did the spill cause the death? I doubt it - the machine has run great for two years after the spill. But, I can't deny that there was a spill so... no AppleCare.
BUT, a main part of the problem was due to the recall on nVidia GPUs. The recall states that if you experience problems linked to the GPU, it will be replaced even if the laptop is out of warranty. Well, Apple refused. I'm not sure who is in the right - if they recalled the chip, then that's an admission that it was defective at the time of manufacture. So a spill should be irrelevant. BUT, I don't think they can replace just the chip - and Apple said they wanted to replace the whole motherboard.
So... took my laptop back and sent it to DTTService in California for a refurbished MLB replacement. We'll see... their price is about 1/3 Apple's. If I can get the laptop working, it'll likely have a decent life ahead of it still.
